CE marking indicates that a product meets EU safety, health, and environmental protection requirements. It is mandatory for products sold in the EU/EEA in regulated categories: electronics and electrical equipment (LVD, EMC directives), machinery, toys, personal protective equipment, medical devices, construction products, and pressure equipment. Products outside these regulated categories do not need CE marking. The process: identify applicable directives for your product category, test against harmonised standards, prepare a technical file, issue a Declaration of Conformity, and affix the CE mark.

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is an EU regulation covering chemical substances. It applies to: products containing substances of very high concern (SVHCs) in concentrations above 0.1% by weight, chemical importers (where the importer in the EU must ensure REACH compliance), and articles (finished products) containing restricted substances. For Indian exporters of textiles, leather, plastics, and chemicals, REACH compliance requires testing for restricted substances and SVHCs. REACH substance lists are updated regularly — check the current SVHC candidate list before each shipment.

FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) registration or licence is required for all food businesses in India — including exporters. For exports, FSSAI issues: FSSAI Export Certificate (required by many importing countries as proof of food safety compliance), Lab Test Reports from FSSAI-recognised labs (required for product-specific exports), and Health Certificate for specific categories (meat, dairy, processed foods). Additionally, for exports to countries with specific requirements: HACCP certification, ISO 22000, or organic certification may be needed. APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) manages the export promotion and registration for scheduled agricultural products.

Major EU and US brands increasingly require their Indian suppliers to meet ESG standards beyond product certifications. Common requirements: (1) Social audit — SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit), SA8000, or BSCI audit of your factory; (2) Supplier Code of Conduct — signed declaration of compliance with buyer's labour, safety, and environmental standards; (3) ESG questionnaire — annual supplier sustainability questionnaire (EcoVadis, CDP, or buyer-specific); (4) Carbon footprint disclosure — Scope 3 emissions data from Indian suppliers for EU buyer CSRD reporting.
