How to Choose

6 Criteria for Choosing an MSME Business Advisor in India

1.

Operating experience

Has the advisor actually run a business or held a P&L leadership role? Advisors with only consulting experience typically give textbook advice that does not survive contact with Indian MSME reality.

2.

MSME-specific track record

Large-company experience does not transfer directly to MSMEs. The constraints are different: family dynamics, limited management bandwidth, informal systems, and working capital sensitivity require specific experience.

3.

India-market depth

India-specific knowledge matters: GST compliance, MSME government schemes, NBFC vs bank financing nuances, regulatory environment, and local talent markets. A generalist international advisor lacks this.

4.

Implementation vs. advice

Most Indian MSMEs have experienced advisors who leave reports that collect dust. Look for advisors who embed with your team and take accountability for execution outcomes, not just recommendations.

5.

Fee transparency

Hourly billing incentivises more hours. Fixed-fee or outcome-linked engagements align advisor incentives with your results. Ask: how is success defined and measured?

6.

Reference-ability

Ask for 2–3 references in similar-size businesses, similar sector, similar challenge. If an advisor cannot provide references, the track record is likely thin.
