The five most common cybersecurity vulnerabilities in Indian SMEs: (1) No multi-factor authentication (MFA) on email, ERP, and cloud services — enabling credential theft attacks; (2) Unpatched software — running Windows versions out of support or applications months behind on security patches; (3) No offsite backup — backup on the same device or same network that a ransomware attack would encrypt; (4) No security awareness training — employees clicking phishing links (the #1 attack vector); (5) Excessive user privileges — every employee has admin rights, so one compromised account can affect the entire system.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) requires a second verification factor (phone OTP, authenticator app, or hardware token) in addition to a password to log in. With MFA, a stolen password alone cannot compromise the account. Microsoft research shows MFA blocks 99.9% of automated credential attacks. For Indian SMEs, minimum MFA scope: business email (Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace), cloud services (AWS, Azure, GCP), banking portals, and any ERP or accounting system accessible over the internet. MFA setup takes 1–2 hours per system and is free on most platforms.

The 3-2-1 backup rule for Indian SMEs: 3 copies of data, on 2 different media types, with 1 copy offsite. Practical implementation: automated daily backup to local NAS (copy 1), automated sync to a second device or cloud storage in a different region (copy 2 — offsite), and weekly backup to cold storage or tape (copy 3). Monthly restore test: can you actually recover from the backup? Most SMEs discover their backup is broken only when they need it. Cloud backup services (Azure Backup, AWS S3, Backblaze Business) cost ₹2,000–10,000/month for comprehensive SME coverage.

ISO 27001 (Information Security Management System) certification is not legally required for Indian SMEs but is increasingly demanded by: large enterprise customers as a vendor security prerequisite, government buyers for IT services and software contracts, international clients (especially EU and US) as a data handling assurance, and financial services regulators (RBI, SEBI, IRDAI) for their technology vendors. The certification process typically takes 9–18 months and costs ₹5–20 lakh depending on scope. For smaller SMEs, IBEAN recommends starting with ISO 27001-aligned controls without formal certification — demonstrating equivalent capability at lower cost.
